Episode 9: Don’t Spend Your Summer Recovering From Your Job | Building a Sustainable Career Instead of Surviving One

Aug 03, 2026

Do your vacations leave you feeling refreshed—or are you spending your time off simply trying to recover from work?

For many helping professionals, summer becomes less about rest and more about recovering from months of chronic stress and burnout. But what if that’s a sign that something deeper needs to change?

In this episode of Helping From the Inside Out, Rosa Jones, LPC, explores why vacations alone can’t fix burnout and what it really takes to build a career that supports your well-being for the long haul.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why needing your entire vacation to recover is a warning sign
  • The difference between resting and recovering from burnout
  • Why burnout requires more than taking time off
  • How your beliefs, boundaries, and behaviors contribute to chronic exhaustion
  • A mindset shift that can help you build a career you can sustain

If you’re a counselor, therapist, healthcare professional, educator, social worker, ministry leader, or anyone in a helping profession, this episode is for you.

Welcome to Helping from the Inside Out, a weekly moment of encouragement for human services and healthcare professionals. If your work is to care for others, this space is for you. Each week, we offer a short reminder to protect your well being so you can keep serving with strength. This podcast is brought to you by Freedom Support Services, where our vision is to heal people who heal the world.

Do you remember Summers as a kid? Two or three months ahead of school, staying up late, losing track of the day of the week. For most of us, summer was just fun. I don't remember feeling like I needed to recover from anything. I just got to enjoy it. But somewhere along the way, all of that changed.

As adults, many of us spend our summers recovering from our jobs instead of actually enjoying the season. We wait all year long for a vacation, a long weekend, a few days off, only to spend half of it exhausted.

We sleep more than usual, don't have any energy, and we really can't relax. And then finally, when we start to relax, it's time to go back to work again. Does that sound familiar? That's just not being tired. It might be burnout. And for those of us in the helping professions, listen, burnout is incredibly common. But just because something is common doesn't mean that it's healthy.

And it definitely doesn't mean that it's something we should accept as normal. Here's the truth you can't recover from chronic burnout with a vacation.

A weekend away won't fix it. Neither will a staycation. Those things are important, but they only help if you're recovering from healthy work. They don't solve a lifestyle built around chronic depletion. Real burnout recovery requires something much deeper.

It requires changing the beliefs that keep you overworking, the behaviors that keep you overcommitted, the boundaries that you never quite enforce, right? And the identity you've built around being needed. Because here's what I want for you. I don't want you to build a career that constantly requires you to recover, but one that you can actually sustain, one that has purpose without causing you repeats.

One that doesn't have you spending every vacation trying to recover. One where your life is bigger than your job. Come on. So as you're enjoying the rest of your summer, pay attention to what your time off is telling you. Are you resting or are you having a full life? Are you just recovering or are have you been running on anything? And those are two really different things.

Let it become an invitation for you to make a change. Because sustainable careers aren't built by working harder. They're built by working healthier. So do yourself a favor. The next time you find yourself focusing on recovering instead of living sustainably, you need to pause and remind yourself I need to build a career that I can sustain, not just one that I can recover.
