Episode 14: You Can Start Fresh Without Starting Over
Sep 07, 2026Have you ever been doing great with a goal, healthy habit, or boundary—and then life happened?
You miss a few workouts. Work gets busy. Your boundaries slip. And suddenly you’re thinking, “I was doing so well. Now I have to start all over.”
But you don’t.
In Episode 14 of Helping From the Inside Out, Rosa Jones, LPC, talks about why getting off track doesn’t erase the progress you’ve already made. You’ll learn how to move beyond all-or-nothing thinking, give yourself grace when life interrupts your plans, and get back to the habits and boundaries that were already working.
Because progress doesn’t require perfection.
Sometimes progress is simply how quickly you find your way back.
In This Episode:
- Why setbacks don’t erase your progress
- The difference between starting fresh and starting over
- How all-or-nothing thinking can keep you stuck
- Giving yourself grace without giving up
- Returning to healthy habits and boundaries
- Why learning to restart is part of sustainable growth

You know that you can start fresh without starting over? Listen, life happens. Maybe you have been consistent with working out, getting to sleep on time, taking your vitamins, leaving work on time, all of the things. You're doing great, and you've been steady for several weeks, and then bam, something happens.
Listen, your kid gets sick, your dog gets sick. You end up having migraines for a couple of days. Life happens. But we've got to be careful because just because we fall off the wagon doesn't mean that we have to start all over at the beginning.
Sometimes we don't need to start over, we just need to start fresh. And you gotta watch that because if your mentality and mindset is. When I mess up or I get off track, I have to start over every time. That can feel like a whole lot of work. Work that you don't want to approach. Come on. Work that it takes you longer to do. And what I'm saying here, it doesn't always take starting over. In that four weeks that you were consistent going to the gym, you built some habits.
All you've got to do sometimes is just pick off where you left off. Because you've already learned something. You've already developed something, most likely, that is still on the inside of you that can be reactivated.
And so if you're in a situation now or you find yourself even in a couple of weeks where the habits are going great and you fall off, I wanna challenge you to start thinking about things a little differently.
I want to challenge you and encourage you to give yourself some grace. You're just a human. And showing yourself grace and compassion isn't about giving up or throwing in the towel, but it's just acknowledging that you know sometimes we fall down, but we can get right back up. So the next time, come on, you find yourself wanting to give up.
Wanting to throw in the towel or just feeling like, man, I just blew it. I want you to instead say, I've developed some good habits, I can get myself back in the driver's seat, put my hands on the wheel, and just hit the gas again and go for it. Right? Why? Because life isn't perfect and you don't have to be.
