Episode 8: Who Are You Outside of Work? | Reconnecting With Yourself Beyond Your Role
Jul 27, 2026Who are you…outside of work?
Not your title.
Not the letters behind your name.
Not your job.
For many helping professionals, work is more than a career—it’s a calling. But over time, it’s easy for that calling to become your identity. Somewhere between caring for others, meeting deadlines, and carrying the emotional weight of your work, you may lose sight of the person behind the profession.
In Episode 8 of Helping From the Inside Out, Rosa Jones, LPC, explores why reconnecting with yourself beyond your role isn’t selfish—it’s essential. Learn how cultivating a life outside of work can help prevent burnout, improve work-life balance, and strengthen your ability to serve others well.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Why helping professionals often tie their identity to their work
- How work can quietly become your entire identity
- Why hobbies, friendships, and personal interests make you a healthier helper
- Practical ways to reconnect with yourself outside of your profession
- How caring for yourself helps you care for others more sustainably
Whether you’re a counselor, therapist, nurse, physician, educator, first responder, pastor, social worker, or another helping professional, this episode is a reminder that you are more than what you do.
“The healthiest helpers don’t lose themselves in their work. They bring their whole selves to it.”

Welcome to Helping from the Inside Out, a weekly moment of encouragement for human services and healthcare professionals. If your work is to care for others, this space is for you. Each week, we offer a short reminder to protect your well-being so you can keep serving with strength. This podcast is brought to you by Freedom Support Services, where our vision is to heal people who heal the world.
Welcome to episode 8. Who are you outside of work? I just asked you a question. Who are you outside of your job? You know, a lot of times as helpers and healers, we can often confuse our occupation with our identity. Why? Because a lot of us are doing things to help and serve because we're called to it. It feels like purpose. But the reality of it is that your purpose, while it's a very important part of you, it is not.
The entire essence of who it is that you are. And so it is so important for us to not just know who we are professionally, but to know and to hold on to and to cultivate who we are outside of what we do for others. So I want you to think about it. If your job disappears tomorrow, who would you be? What would you do to yourself? What brings you joy outside of showing up for other people? Right.
And here's the thing: healthy helpers have lives beyond their work. Come on, healthy helpers have friends, hobbies, trips and travel, interests. Right? That's healthy because all of that is a part of what it means to be human. And when we have human connection, we're not just talking about connections with people that we help.
We're talking about being healthy means having connections with our people, people who are there for us, people who delight in us, people who can help us, people who can support us, people who can sit around and do nothing with us. And when we stay in touch with those parts of ourselves, it helps us to remember that we are so much more than our productivity.
Come on. We are so much more than our productivity.
Want you to do yourself a favor this week. When you find yourself getting so wrapped up in work and so caught up in what you're doing, come on, and you feel tempted to push away or not do the things that are important to you, challenge yourself, come on, to be who you are outside of work. Call a friend, come on, go to breakfast with someone, play with your kids.
Listen, pick up a hobby. Sign up for something. Do something that makes you you outside of your job. And I promise you this: you will show up as a better helper to others when you do that.
Did this bless your life? If it did, share this with another helper and healer. I will see you next week.
