Episode 7: The Emails Will Still Be There
Jul 20, 2026Learning to Step Away Without Anxiety
Do emails and text messages make you feel like everything is urgent?
If you're a counselor, healthcare professional, educator, ministry leader, first responder, or anyone in a helping profession, you're not alone. Constant notifications can quietly increase stress, interrupt your focus, contribute to burnout, and make it difficult to be fully present at work and at home.
In this episode of Helping From the Inside Out, Rosa Jones, LPC, explores why being responsive isn't the same as being responsible. You'll discover how the pressure to respond immediately can create unnecessary anxiety, steal your attention, and keep you living in reaction mode instead of leading your day with intention.
Whether you're looking to improve your work-life balance, establish healthier boundaries with technology, reduce stress, or prevent burnout, this episode offers practical strategies you can begin using today.
In This Episode, You'll Learn:
- Why emails and text messages create a false sense of urgency
- The difference between being responsive and being responsible
- How constant notifications affect your focus, productivity, and emotional well-being
- Practical ways to set healthy boundaries with your inbox, phone, and technology
- How protecting your attention can help you become more present at work, at home, and in your relationships
One of the greatest leadership skills you can develop is learning to manage your attention instead of allowing your attention to be managed by everyone else's priorities. When you stop reacting to every notification, you create more space for peace, purpose, and meaningful work.

Can I tell you a secret?
I really, really hate emails and text messages. I hate them. Why? Because they actually create a false sense of urgency for me most of the time. So I'm working minding my business, the phone's buzzing. Right? I'm working, minding my business. There's a ding. I got a new email. And so it just kind of takes me out of my focus and my concentration because a lot of times it honestly causes me to stop, and it interrupts what I'm doing. So that's why I hate it.
But here's a reality check.
Most of the time when you get an email or a text message, guess what? It's not an emergency. But we treat it like one, don't we?
I think we've all been conditioned to just respond right away. But here's one thing that can help us come out of some of that. I think a lot of us as helpers and healers, we're very responsible people. But let's not get this confused.
Being responsible doesn't mean that you have to be responsive immediately.
Did you catch it?
Being responsible doesn't mean you have to be responsive or react immediately. Those are two totally different things. Right? And why do we respond so quickly? Why do we treat everything like it's a hot potato?
Because we care. We care about our students. We care about our patients, our clients, and our church members.
So we end up sometimes spending all day reacting, reacting to whatever comes our way, responding because we're like, this is important, and that is important, and we just don't want to drop the ball and disappoint anybody or let anybody down.
But here's the problem with that: spending your entire day reacting, come on, to things that just pop up is not self-leadership.
Okay. So there it really is no way for us to be the best professionals and helpers and healers that we want to be if we're allowing everything to just beep, beep, beep, beep, tell us what to do. That's very unintentional and we don't really get very far. Come on, as we'd like to, right? Or as we could if we move with more intention.
So keep this in mind. Every buzz steals your intention. Every time there's a ding, it takes you away from your focus.
It can cause some stress and also just some residual exhaustion from playing the mental gymnastics of going back and forth. And so I want you to do yourself a favor this week.
The next time that you hear a buzz or notification that tries to take you off track, I want you to finish what you're doing. I want you to be present.
I want you to remind yourself that this can wait. You might have to turn off your notifications. You may have to turn on the do-not-disturb feature on your phone. But that is my challenge to you this week, because it is so important for you to allow the best of you, who you are, and what you have to give to others to happen to them and for you to flow out of that and not to allow things to pop up and tell you what to do.
Cause guess what? You can do better than that. You can't control everything, but there are some things that you can control, and your time, your energy, and your focus, come on. That lands into some of what we can do.
So I want you to do yourself that favor this week. I know that's challenging, but I'm taking a challenge too.
Did this bless you? If it did, do me a favor and share this with a helper and healer.
And until next week, I'll see ya.
