Episode 11: You Don’t Need a Perfect Routine

Aug 17, 2026

Consistency Matters More Than Perfection

Creating the perfect routine can feel like the answer to stress, productivity, and work-life balance—but real life rarely follows the schedule we planned.

In Episode 11 of Helping From the Inside Out, we explore why counselors, therapists, healthcare professionals, educators, social workers, and other helping professionals can get caught in the pursuit of the “perfect” routine. When client needs, unexpected responsibilities, documentation, family demands, or everyday life interrupt the plan, it’s easy to feel like you’ve failed.

But healthy routines don’t have to be perfect to be effective.

This episode offers practical encouragement for building sustainable habits, letting go of all-or-nothing thinking, and choosing consistency over perfection. You’ll learn why small choices still matter, how to start again when your routine gets disrupted, and how greater flexibility can help prevent burnout while supporting your overall well-being.

If you’re a healer or helper trying to create healthier boundaries, improve work-life balance, practice consistent self-care, or build a more sustainable career, this episode is for you.

Watch Episode 11 of Helping From the Inside Out and remember: you don’t need a perfect routine—you just need to keep coming back.

Have you ever spent time creating the perfect schedule? I love sitting down with
have time to just have a good time. That feels really good. There's something comforting about believing that I can get the routine right, and then everything else will fall into place. But here's the truth there is no such thing as a perfect routine. Especially if you're someone who helps people for a living. Because your day isn't just your day. A client has a crisis, a parent crisis.

Your supervisor needs something. Your coworker asks for help. Your child gets six. Documentation is taking longer than you think that it would. All these things happen and before you know it, that beautiful color-coded schedule that you created on Sunday looks nothing like your Tuesday.

Does that sound familiar?

I think one of the reasons that we're so attached to having a perfect school team. It's because routine makes us feel like we're in control. And when life feels predictable, then we convince ourselves that if we can just organize everything well enough, we'll finally feel less overwhelmed. But helping professionals are, and the professions are just unpredictable by nature. You can create structure; you just can't control every interruption. And guess what, honey? That's okay.

The problem isn't your routine getting disrupted. The problem is what we often believe is disrupted. Routine means that we failed. So we skip the workout, right? Because we missed it that morning. We don't take lunch because it was already 2.30. So right? We abandoned the whole week because Monday didn't go according to plan. But consistency was never about doing something perfectly.

Consistency is about coming back again and again and again. And some days you might be caught in there taking a full hour to take care of yourself in the gym. And other days it might just be a five-minute walk in between sessions. Some days you'll have to leave work. You get to leave work on time. And then other days you'll simply remember to drink water before you see your next client.

And here's the thing, both of those really count. Because healthy habits aren't built by perfect weeks. They're built by ordinary days where you choose to start again. And maybe that's the freedom that you're actually looking for. Not the freedom that comes with finally getting everything right, but the freedom that comes from realizing, guess what? You don't have to. So I want you to do yourself a favor. The next time your routine falls apart.

Pause and remember, you don't need a perfect routine. You just need to keep showing up. One healthy choice at a time, one small step, one day at a time, because consistency, not perfection, is what helps you care for others without losing yourself. So if this episode encouraged you, I want you to share it with another healer or helper who needs this reminder today. Thanks for spending a few minutes with me.

And I'll see you next time on Helping from the Inside Out. Take care. Thank you so much for listening today.
